Inspired by a client, this package of 30 Private lessons will have you ready by Memorial Day! This challenge is a way for you to stick to a goal, gain benefits and loose inches! Remember, your body likes to move and feel flexible and strong, Pilates is a non-impact way for ANYONE to restore vim and vigor back into life!

We will begin with all the basics of Pilates and progress your body into intermediate and possibly advanced!!

On day one we will take your measurements, as long as you feel OK with it, take note of aches and pains and what your realistic goal(s) are that you want to achieve. Halfway through, day 15, we will revisit that material and note changes and responses in your body. On your 30th lesson we will see that you have met your goal(s), lost inches and most definitely gained confidence!

We want you to have the highest and best experience in Pilates and with this challenge and in order for that to happen, we recommend practicing 2 or more times a week.

Put this challenge to the test and we will REWARD anyone who complete’s this challenge with a Salon and Spa Gift Certificate to match your new body!

” In 10 you will feel better, in 20 you will look better and in 30 you will have a whole new body.” – Joseph Pilates, he wasn’t joking!

This time of year we usually kick up our workouts and eat better in anticipation of Memorial Day weekend. We focus on our middle, toning our arms and legs and skin. But what about the most important thing? What gets us around all day and holds us up? Besides your powerhouse… your FEET.

These little guys all the way at the bottom don’t get enough respect. They do a lot of work and while we focus on the parts most others see, we allow the feet to get the short end of the stick. This can lead to more issues along the way.

Specific Issues:

I have worked with bunions, flat feet and plantar fasciitis, just to name a few. In Pilates we begin with the “footwork” on the reformer which strengthens and stretches the feet. Not only do these exercises work the feet but it offers a bit of reflexology as well. Most of the exercises performed in Pilates put the feet into positions that are a mini stretch for the afore mentioned issues.

Besides using the reformer to aid in the recovery of the feet, I also use the “toe exerciser”. This small piece of equipment works the feet and has been said to save people from bunion surgery! Personally, it relieved a small bach ache I had for a very long time!

Gait:

Not only will you strengthen your feet but you will improve your posture and gait. Have you ever watched how you walk? How others walk? Weak feet and ankles can lead to other issues in the body, perhaps you broke an ankle and feel pain on the opposite side…

Your gait is based on how you use your feet and where you put the work in the rest of your body, when you have weakness or issues, this throws off your gait.

Pedi-CURE: Cure those feet with a workout just for them! Make your feet match your pedicure but looking and feeling great. And above all, help hold you up by allowing you to walk smooth and feeling lifted!

I know you don’t have the toe exerciser so after you buy broccoli or asparagus, save the purple rubberband and use that as your toe exerciser!! Put the rubberband on each toe, with feet hip width apart, plant your ankles and pull the feet apart. Hold for 5 then release. Repeat about 5 times. Then try holding one foot steady while you pull the weaker one away. Hold for 5 and repeat stronger then back to weaker. Be mindful to scoop , squeeze and lift during the exercises!

Still don’t get it? Come on in and we will work those feet!!

This past month I attended the Arizona Pilates Conference and spent 3 days with Kathi Ross-Nash, Chris Robinson and Brooke Siler just to name a few. We began each day with a mat work out followed by lecture and practice. I decided to take 3 extra workshops to deepen my training and thought, which included, The Add on Mat, Pilates and Sports and Fix your Feet. Each one offered extended value in the Pilates method by itself or connected to something else.

I have already utilized the “Add on Mat” practice which takes one through the matwork by accumulating the exercises and performing each only once. (ex: 1,1,2,1,2,3,1,2,3,4) Putting the 6 key principles to use, the work becomes an endeless movement. As a client, this method allows you to focus on what’s coming next (concentration) which helps to connect the movement (flow) and how important the powerhouse really is. The other benefit is the cardio! When you combine the 6 Keys together in your practice, it gives a whole new meaning to Pilates!

Fix your feet, fixed my back! This little piece of apparatus called the “toe exerciser” can change your feet, your gait (that’s the way you walk) and posture. In my case, I had a back issue that I believe stemmed from a toe injury a long time ago. 10 minutes with this little guy and pain is gone! Great for Baby Boomers, Men and individuals with specific feet issues!

We also worked with the “foot corrector”, this is said to be the first invented by Mr.Pilates. A benefit to those who cannot stand is that both of these pieces can be used while sitting. Together, these fine pieces aid in recovery, maintenance and strength of the foot.

During the Pilates and sports workshop we reviewed what is important to an athlete and how can Pilates benefit this person? Specifically? Using the four main components of sports/athletes; push, pull, run, jump, we practiced and discussed where in those movements Pilates is found and how the strength of the powerhouse increases all. Remember that Pilates is a whole, full and 360 degree look at your body. It can focus a specific area, yes, but engaging the whole body together increases all four of those components.

This past week I had the opportunity to meet with some great people in Ny hosted by Alycea Ungaro. We talked business and Pilates, shared ideas and industry thoughts.

As I reflect on the past few weeks of what I have experienced and learned, I am reminded of how much I love what I do. When I witness a client reach their goal and succeed I truly feel blessed.

Pilates is a form of exercise that can become a way of life. Being healthy IS a way of life.
Joseph Pilates claims he “never took an aspirin a day in his life.” I have to admit, I have been doing Pilates since ’98 and I don’t take anything either. There are humans around me who have many ailments and take numerous “pills” to alleviate and “cure” their aches and pains. Let’s not get it twisted, I am over 30, have old gymnast knees and wrists, fell off of a trapeze onto my face and am a modern dancer. So I definitely have physical issues but Pilates has been the ONLY thing that has allowed me to keep moving. (I plan to be able to hang upside down at 100). Clearly for me, Pilates is my way of life.
One has to be willing to explore new movement opportunities to gain a mind/body connection, which can enhance your current workout regime. Pilates constantly is counter massaging your internal organs and muscles. It offers a natural progression of the excersises so as to avoid any jarring, intense impact or pain during the movement. Pilates challenges the muscles, body and mind which keeps the brain alive!
Those humans I referred to earlier usually poo-poo Pilates claiming it’s like yoga or say they don’t get anything out of it. They have a fear of commitment and fear of learning something new. I think it’s because they are afraid of falling in love and never looking back Pilates is a learned behavior which offers an infinite amount of benefits depending on the individual.

For example:

Yoga is a system invented thousands of years ago, Pilates about a hundred. Yoga has poses, pilates has exercises. Yoga is performed solely on a mat, Pilates uses various types of apparatus and mats.

If you happen to be someone who hasn’t moved in a while, Pilates is the perfect way to start moving again.
My point is that Pilates is healthy, gentle and anyone can do it! Stop being scared and invest in the only thing you know you wake up to everyday… Yourself!

It’s been awhile since I have put up a post. So here is what has been happening…
6 Keys has officially moved to 200 Krams Ave!! This new space boasts large windows, gleaming hardwood floors, our own powder room and a/c. Come see us and join Pilates!
By August we will have a new software program to make everyone’s life easier! With this new program you will be able to schedule and payonline.
I attended continuing education at True Pilates New York in June with Sari. (That’s Romana’s daughter) I was royally Pilates’d and reminded how we are constantly learning. At the end we used Joseph Pilates’ invention the “Breath-A-sizer” which is small piece of equipment that measures your exhalation. I was able to roll through my whole spine (rolling from standing to down to my ankles) and exhale for 9 counts. Most can get to 6.
Every week, in addition to my own workout, I take a private lesson with another teacher to maintain my knowledge, body and mind. As I believe it is important for others to practice Pilates, I practice what I preach!
Lastly, 6 Keys Pilates is in the running again for Best Pilates Studio of Philly, click here to make us #1! http://ctvr.us/6keyspilates

I could definitely find any reason for you to practice Pilates and winter weather is a perfect example to use!
Between shoveling all types of snow, chipping away at ice , slipping and falling, winter weather has its way with us.
Shoveling requires the use of your back, arms and legs, areas of the body that are overused. So by the next day your muscles ache, maybe your back hurts and you may feel terrible. If you’re someone who suffers with rotator cuff pain, back pain or arthritis, shoveling can exacerbate these issues. Now you really dislike the snow and the clean up.
Slipping and falling can put you out of commission for days, weeks even months. Most people, after falling, seek care, get a prescription, wait until it goes away and then proceed to live their lives. Not understanding that the injury can hibernate and rear it’s ugly head when you are doing something your normally do like making the bed.

How can Pilates benefit these situations?
* Pilates is low impact and allows one to work at their own level so there is no risk for injury.
* Your recovery time will be quicker.
* The whole body is strengthened, not just your site of injury.
* Pilates is a gentle, progressive style of movement so it will never jar or tear muscles.
* Pilates teaches a mind/body connection so while your body heals, your mind heals as well.

****Always research the studio and instructor before investing in yourself and Pilates. A certified instructor should have a complete certification in mat and the apparatus from an accredited institution. There are different programs and styles of Pilates; not all are created equal!
