Kyphosis and Scoliosis
Recently I have had a slue of clients with some form of Kyphosis or Scoliosis.
Kyphosis can be described as forward rounding of the upper back and sometimes referred to as “Hunchback” or “Roundback”. The symptoms include: fatigue, spinal stiffness, mild back pain and hunchback or slouching.
Scoliosis can be described as a sideways curvature of the spine, during the growth spurt just before puberty. Symptoms include: one hip higher than other, one shoulder higher than other, shoulder blade sticks out and uneven waistline.
***Clients with these types of issues are encouraged to take private lessons so the instructor can make the appropriate modifications.***
Kyphosis and Scoliosis are spinal issues and can start early on or progress over time. They can lead to many problems and sometimes surgery.
KYPHOSIS
Clients with kyphosis will have a hard time lying flat; the rounder the upper back (or cervical spine) the harder it is to lengthen the back and neck. In Pilates, a small pillow will lift the head so the spine is in alignment. We wouldn’t want to move without being centered! Most of the areas effected by kyphosis are: neck, shoulders, sternum, ribs, lungs (sometimes), lower back.
Pilates for a client with Kyphosis
(Presuming 3/wk)
First Lesson: Instructor will assess by using Pre-Pilates. Pre-Pilates is determining a persons range of motion with physical therapy like exercises. Beginning with the head, neck, shoulders and arms. Practicing the movement with the powerhouse engaged. Learning about the “box” and “6 key principles” and how to apply them to Pilates. Depending on the client and severity of kyphosis, exercises will be introduced through the use of equipment and/or the matwork.
Fifth Lesson: By this point the client should begin to feel the changes and understand to concept of Pilates. Pre-Pilates may not be needed and the lesson may begin with the reformer. During the next few lessons, the powerhouse gains strength which supports the spine that will help the client stand taller. The chest opens which pulls the shoulders down the back and stretch out the neck muscles.
Beyond 10 Lessons: At this stage the client should have a great understanding of the method and be able to connect the mind and body. Not only will they be stronger but the lesson will be tailored to the client and the instructor can precisely “work” on the issue. Combining the mind and body, strengthening the “core” and focusing on the specific area at hand can greatly improve a condition.
SCOLIOSIS
Clients with scoliosis whether mild or severe are predominantly stronger on one side and over-development is visible. In Pilates, this client will maintain their alignment and strengthen the powerhouse to aid in pain management. The areas most affected by scoliosis are: neck, shoulders, spine, waist and hips.

(Presuming 3/wk)
First Lesson: Like kyphosis, Pre-Pilates would be used as well as the principles and box. However, a persons gait can tell a larger story of how they move and walk. Encouraging the movement to come from the powerhouse and stay aligned. Introduce them to the equipment.
Fifth Lesson: By this point the client should begin to feel the changes and notice a small difference. They should understand the concepts and be able to apply them to the method. Sitting taller and reduced lower back pain have been noted by most.
Beyond 10 Lessons: Now the client can move with more flow and energy. They work the body evenly and have taken their Pilates method into their daily life. Again, like kyphosis, the lessons have been tailored to the individual and the instructor can make precise corrections which aid in the gain of connecting the mind with the body.
Whatever your ailment, issue or crutch, Pilates can aid in the recovery and regain strength to the areas affected. Try it today!!
