Pilates in PhiladelphiaManayunk Pilates is located off Main Street in the Manayunk section of Philadelphia. We are excited to offer true and pure Pilates classes to all. Jennifer Cybulski (owner/instructor) has been certified through Romana’s Pilates, which is the closest one can get to Joe Pilates himself. Through constant training and continuing education, Jennifer maintains the expectations of a Romana’s certified instructor.

Contrology, its original name, was designed for Joe Pilates himself. As a sickly child, he studied Eastern and Western styles of movement, while also watching animals in the wild. During the Influenza epidemic, Joe Pilates worked with interns on the Isle of Man and taught them pilates mat work. As a result of this training, none of the interns became ill or died. After WWI, Joe Pilates worked with non-ambulatory patients by attaching a series springs to their beds, and as a result, came up with the pilates apparatus.

By the mid 1920′s, Joe traveled to NYC, where he opened up his first studio. He shared this studio space with the New York City Ballet and gained exposure. Not long after opening his first studio, more people became interested in the method, and pilates expended into what we have today.

“Physical fitness can neither be acquired by wishful thinking nor by outright purchase.”

“Contrology is complete coordination of body, mind and spirit.”
